I am an ex-alcoholic and addict - I’ve dabbled in homelessness for a while, slept in parks… I come here because there are certain people here that I use as a soundboard to help me navigate through daily life. A friend of mine introduced me to The Kettle – I came here to the drop-in center, had a cup of coffee and thought – hey this is a pretty nice place. The staff made me feel welcomed here, just with their presence and understanding. The Kettle has supported me in all ways. I was diagnosed 19 years ago with borderline paranoid schizophrenia due to my childhood and teenage years. Many people want to keep me away but the staff here want to bring you in. They want to hear your story. They want to listen to you! I am part of the SEED program and right now I serve coffee (at the drop-in). The Kettle helped with the trauma that I have gone through – not only with moral support, but with financial support. When my brother passed, we had been living together in a 3 bedroom house and my whole disability cheque was used to pay the rent. The Kettle stepped in and gave me $400 to help pay the rent so that I could transition to supportive housing. I thought, 'wow- nobody’s ever done that to me before'. I moved into Kettle on Burrard on July 1st 6 years ago. Everyone else was celebrating Canada Day but moving was my celebration! Things have been really good here. It is a clean, nice building and the staff here are great. My front yard is St. Paul's hospital so I walk across the road and sit on the benches and sit back and enjoy. Helping others helps me – if I can help out someone in any way shape or form, I’m there. Doris and her boyfriend first came to The Kettle for a cup of coffee. Soon, coffee turned into lunch and Doris started getting more and more involved. From starting a job on the street cleaning team to joining the annual camping trip, now 8 years later – Doris has become a well loved regular here at The Kettle. Having grown up without a support system, Doris struggled to advocate for herself and found it challenging to seek help due to her challenges with literacy. She describes becoming a member at The Kettle as a whole new chapter of her life. When she lost her son to an overdose in 2017, she turned to the staff and programming to help her grieve and get through a difficult period of time. “I’ve never received so much support, it means a lot. The role not only gives her purpose, it keeps her active and connected to her community. “It makes me feel really good to be doing something else – it’s better than not knowing what to do”. Doris describes her upbringing as being very challenging and explains that her life has had a lot of negativity but The Kettle is a positive place. Here, she has somewhere to be and things to do that help her on a daily basis. Her favorite memory at The Kettle? Doris looks forward to the annual camping trip, a change of scenery and adventure – “It’s life changing – just to get out of the city for a few days. I remember last time we went and saw a bear. He works as a Mental Health Worker for The Kettle Society - this is a story of his journey from mental health to mental wealth. Born in Singapore in 1969, Kagan immigrated with his family to Canada in 1986 and ended up in Vancouver in his late teens. Beyond opera and oratorio, Sarah curates and produces socio-politically relevant art song experiences of works from the last three centuries. As a creator/composer, Sarah weaves electroacoustic tapestries inspired by the primally physical nature of resonance. They also lecture on the ins and outs of western art music, wholistic programming, and vocal liberation. When they are not in the studio, at the rehearsal, or on the stage, Sarah loves cycling around Vancouver on their trusty rusty road bike. They love to cook and bake, and are terrible at keeping plants alive. The Kettle is excited to have Sarah as the new choir director starting May 19th. Today, she is 6+ years sober and lives a happy, healthy life with her two young children. This is her story. I left my town in Quebec in the summer of 2014 to pick fruit in the Okanagan but ended up staying for the winter and working another summer in the fields. At the time I was partying and experimenting with drugs which became problematic. After couch surfing for a little while in Vancouver, I eventually became homeless and found a community on Commercial Drive. In 1958, at the age of 55, she began to foster children on an emergency basis. Peggy provided transitional support for children and teens who had been sexually assaulted and traumatized. The Kettle decided to honor her legacy by naming the first transitional house for women experiencing both mental health issues and domestic violence, after her. Today, he has a roof over his head and money to pay his bills. “Since I started working for The Kettle I have even been saving some money. I bought a bicycle and an electric scooter. I never had those things before", says Jose. His current SEED assignment is Kitchen Floor Cleaning in the Drop-In. He is a powerhouse cleaner and takes great pride in his work. Often, their parents are either estranged or deceased, so there’s no one to help them. Not only are they unable to retrieve the information they need to be recognized, they must also relive the trauma of residential school survivorship by explaining why they have haven’t been able to obtain ID and access the services they deserve. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia when I was just nine years old. Living with the effects of my diagnosis and managing my medication has been a lifelong challenge. For many years, I turned to substances to self-medicate. I lived on the street in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, bouncing in and out of shelters. I've always enjoyed the idea of life being like a beautiful tapestry. When I think about this period in my life, it's like I had forgotten what pattern I was trying to weave. I was able to get clean from street drugs, but I was heavily medicated and it was hard to navigate the effects of my mental illness. I struggled to work, establish a healthy routine or maintain relationships. I didn’t trust the healthcare system or any institutions really – I felt like they had only hurt me. I didn’t know where to turn for help. For months I sat outside The Kettle's Drop-In Centre on Venables Street. I felt safer slightly outside of the heart of the Downtown Eastside, but not safe enough to go inside the Drop-In.
