Security Building Attendant - Kettle on Burrard - Casual

Kettle on Burrard has 140 units, located on Burrard Street across from St. Paul’s Hospital. This is a 16- story affordable housing project includes community and commercial space. Easily accessible by transit. We have a team of Security Attendants as part of the Infrastructure & Facilities Team.

We are currently seeking individuals with availability to work all shifts including overnight.

Shifts hours are: 7:30am to 3:30pm, 3pm to 11pm, 6pm to 10pm, and 10:30pm to 8:30am

Shifts are offered Monday to Sunday (Statuary Holidays included)

Salary & Compensation:

$23.42 - $25.00 per hour plus 10% of straight time pay in lieu of scheduled vacation and paid statutory holidays

Job Summary

Reporting to the Facilities & Infrastructure Manager, the Security Attendant controls access to the building, which includes signing in and out clients, service providers, and others authorized to enter the building.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Uses computer and camera monitoring systems to track those coming and going from the building. Logs in and out all visitors/service providers to the building.

  • Understand and adhere to current Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) regulations regarding information about tenants.

  • Provides entry access for Tenants and guests. Guests are to be qualified with a photo ID that is to be kept safe and returned to the owner upon exiting the building.

  • Directs service providers to various locations within the building.

  • Respond to emergencies in a calm manner before the arrival of the Vancouver Police Department & Vancouver Fire Department and collaborate with them in emergencies.

  • Reports any illegal activity found in the building to the Police and to the Manager.

  • Provides relevant information and assistance to the Police when they arrive on site.

  • Calls the Fire Department or Ambulance Services as appropriate. Acts as on-site contact for these services.

  • Write reports in a clear and concise manner using established written formats used by the Infrastructure & Facilities department.

  • Must be able to write incident reports in clear detailed professional language.

  • Responds to client questions related to support and services, by directing the client to the appropriate Kettle staff member.

  • May patrol the building to maintain the safety and security of the building and the clients. Sites with more than one Security Attendant on duty will assign one to continually monitor the CCTV and Access Control systems; while the second Security Attendant will perform building roams.

  • May intervene in situations between clients or clients and visitors which are escalating, by using communication techniques and their physical presence but not physical contact. Will call the Police and the Manager as appropriate to do so.

  • Participates in staff meetings by sharing job related information and sharing ideas and suggestions.

  • Participates in positive/effective communication between staff and management by verbal and/or written transmission of job related information.

  • Participates in ensuring the work environment is positive by implementing all aspects of the Employers policies including Respect in the Workplace Policy and Violence Prevention Policy.

  • Participates in ensuring a safe work environment for staff and Member/clients by reporting any situations which require equipment and/or building repairs.

  • Provides basic first-aid and naloxone for clients, if required. May refer the client to another staff member such as the Mental Health Worker or may call an ambulance.

  • May assist in asking any person or group who are congregating from the front entrance to clear the area for tenants and their guests.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12

  • Two years recent related experience

  • Or, an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

  • Current and up to date certificates in CPR, Basic First Aid, WHMIS

  • Mental Health First-Aid

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to deal with others effectively

  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others

  • Ability to operate related equipment

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in regards to staff and tenants

  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position

  • Problem solving skills such as critical thinking to act independently for routine situations and escalate unusual situations to Manager

  • Responsible for own safe travel to and from the workplace

  • Comfortable working with a vulnerable population
