Recovery Café Worker - Casual
Reporting to the Site Manager, the Recovery Café Worker supports vulnerable clients by contributing to the transformation of their lives. Their impactful efforts creates healing communities that will address homelessness, addiction, and other mental health challenges. This is done through providing a non-judgmental environment where the workers promote an alcohol and drug free safe zone, engage with the clients in a weekly Recovery Circle, encourage clients to set goals (e.g., health, education, employment, housing, and legal) and encourage clients to support one another in achieving their own goals, and facilitates programs and activities with large/small groups. The focus of the workers are to sustain clients’ recovery needed to gain and maintain access to housing, social and health services, healthy relationships, education, and employment and move along their preferred life path. Performs meal preparation and cooking with and for the clients. Performs outreach activities as required.

Salary & Compensation:
$31.56 to $33.28 per hour
Duties:
Provides referrals for clients regarding a variety of issues such as landlord tenant issues, obtaining financial assistance from various government agencies; accessing community resources; obtaining and keeping volunteer or job placements including Skills, Esteem, Employment Development (SEED) program
Documents client activities and behaviour such as how a client responds to tasks within the program, care plan, activities of daily living or volunteer or job placement activities
Administrative and record keeping activities – can include; incident reports, related statistics; communication log; supplies/inventory; dietary and nutritional requirements. Prepares list of activities for next shift
Conduct point of care assessment to ascertain if there is a potential for harmful consequences. Based on assessment of client behaviour takes reasonable action to avoid harm to themselves or to others. Actions include using various communication strategies to reduce the tension or distract the client and/or contacting mental health teams, or other care providers, or calling 911 for professional assistance. Provides feedback to appropriate mental health or health care team members
Records client feedback, inquiries and complaints. Reports concerning issues to immediate supervisor
Demonstrates and models for clients healthy life style behaviour and coping skills
Provides basic first aid to clients. Maintains appropriate records of first aid provided. Will call 911 as necessary
Supports new staff members, volunteers, SEED workers and/or practicum students by sharing job information and demonstrating how tasks are to be performed
Oversees volunteers by performing duties such as orienting, training, scheduling, monitoring, and providing feedback and support
Consults with community groups and health care professionals to identify trends, needs, and priority health issues. Maintains support with community groups and volunteer organizations to promote interest, participation, and support for the program
Participates in staff meetings by sharing job related information and sharing ideas and suggestions
Leads weekly Recovery Circle discussions, encourages clients to share their experiences, and promotes a safe, non-judgmental environment
Participates in effective communication between staff and management by verbal and/or written transmission of job related information
Participates in ensuring the work environment is positive by implementing all aspects of the Employers policies including Respect in the Workplace Policy and Violence Prevention Policy
Participates in ensuring a safe work environment for staff and clients by reporting any situations which require equipment and/or building repairs
Meal preparation, cooking duties, and clean up. This includes participating in the preparing and cooking meals with and for the clients during meal times, up to two times per day (breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner). Use of kitchen equipment (including cooking appliances, stove, oven, dishwasher). Ensures the kitchen is clean and maintained, and items are put away after meal service. Ensures safe handling of food
Serves hot coffee and other beverages throughout the day. Ensures the coffee is stocked and continually brews new coffee as required
Embraces and promotes the Recovery Cafe's environment of "Radical Hospitality” (the practice of putting extraordinary effort and emphasis on making people feel welcome)
Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Grade 12
Community Social Services Diploma
2 years of recent related experience including direct practical experience working such as crisis intervention, conflict resolution, psychological rehabilitation techniques, homelessness, working with individuals with mental illness and/or addiction and/or concurrent disorders
OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and life and/or work experience
Current and up to date certificates in CPR, Occupational Basic First Aid (OFA) Level 1, WHMIS, Naloxone, and Food Safe Level One
Abilities & Skills:
Ability to work with people with mental illness, hoarders, homeless at risk and addictions.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation and concurrent disorders including theories and methods.
Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
Ability to operate related equipment
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Ability to organize and prioritize
