Employee Relations Manager - Contract

The Kettle Society is seeking an Employee Relations Manager.  This newly-created position will be a contract until December 31, 2026, and may become permanent.  If you are a People & Culture professional with some management experience and an interest in serving our community, this could be the role for you. 

The Employee Relations Manager is responsible for People and Culture (P&C) team and functional leadership, managing day-to-day P&C operations, implementing initiatives, and supervising staff.  The Manager champions The Kettle’s values, mission, and vision while ensuring the effective implementation of strategies that align with organizational goals.  Provides collaboration and relationship-building across departments to foster a positive and productive workplace culture.  Delivers labour relations guidance and support.  As a trusted advisor, gives strategic P&C expertise to leadership, guiding them in talent management, employee engagement, and organization development. 

Typical Duties & Resonsibilities

  1. Manages members of the P&C team, including performance management, work assignment and instruction, and coaching. 

  2. Acts as an LR consultant, collaborating with Union volunteers and staff to uphold a respectful and productive labour relations environment while handling grievances and labour-management committee business. 

  3. Acts as an HR business partner: provides direction and support to all levels of leadership around performance management and other complex employee issues; offers guidance and advice to all levels of leadership for interpreting the Collective Agreement, Kettle policies, and best practices; and supports organizational change efforts, ensuring smooth transitions and where possible minimal disruption to employee morale and performance. 

  4. Supports all employee lifecycle activities (recruiting, onboarding, development, performance management, retention, and separation) through subordinate staff. 

  5. Assists EDMP referrals and facilitates return-to-work (RTW) processes including accommodations. 

  6. Through subordinate staff, oversees volunteer and practicum student recruiting.  This includes building relationships with the community and local post-secondary institutions and acting as The Kettle's representative. 

  7. Supports recruiting for Excluded roles, including creating offer letters, conducting reference checks, and on-boarding. 

  8. Through subordinate staff, oversees training and certification process, ensuring all employees' required certifications are valid and current, and determining what certifications are required by role.   

  9. Promotes the EAP program to encourage a positive working environment with  psychological health and safety.  

  10. Gives input to and participates in review of Policies and Procedures. 

  11. Seeks and implements efficiencies and process improvements. 

  12. Fosters and maintains community relationships; attends events and networks to promote the Kettle’s employer brand and place in the community. 

  13. Other tasks and projects as assigned. 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Human Resources. 

  • CPHR designation or candidacy.

  • 5 years of People & Culture experience, with 2 years of management experience. 

  • HR / LR experience in a unionized environment. 

  • Healthcare or not-for-profit industry experience is an asset. 

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Expert organizational and project management abilities. 

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.  

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information and use discretion. 

  • Ability to work in a team environment, and foster effective working relationships with managers, employees, union representatives and other external and internal contacts. 

  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

Compensation

  • The successful candidate will start at a rate between $ 76,617 and $95,771 per annum, based on a 37.5-hour work week. This will be individually tailored to reflect your unique experience and qualifications as they relate to the role, along with internal equity.
