Controller - Full Time

We are currently seeking a Controller to play a key leadership role on our Finance Team. This role is essential to ensuring strong financial stewardship of our $21M+ organization, supporting internal decision-making, and ensuring compliance with all funder and regulatory requirements.  

Reporting to the Senior Director, People & Culture and Business Operations, and working closely with the Executive Director and broader Senior Leadership Team, you will lead the Finance function, manage a small team, and oversee all aspects of full-cycle accounting, reporting, payroll, budgeting, and audit. You will also play a key role in grant and funder negotiation and reporting, policy development, risk mitigation, and systems improvement.  This is the most senior direct financial position in the organization. 

What You’ll Do

Financial Management & Oversight

  • Lead full-cycle accounting, payroll, and financial operations 

  • Negotiate with funders on amount and timing of grants and operating budgets 

  • Develop and monitor a $21M+ organizational budget, based on senior leadership and funder requirements 

  • Prepare timely, accurate financial reports (monthly, quarterly, annual) 

  • Oversee financial forecasting, variance analysis, and audit coordination 

  • Supervise a $2M investment portfolio managed by an external broker 

  • Allocate scarce resources, approving budget recommendations and remedial strategies 

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, ASNPO, CRA, and funder-specific requirements 

  • Develop financial policies and procedures 

  • Operationalize strategic and service plans, without clear guidelines  

  • Oversee financial reporting for BC Housing, VCH, and other major funders 

  • Manage grant tracking and ensure compliance with donor restrictions 

  • Maintain robust internal controls and policies to protect organizational assets 

Strategic Advice & Collaboration

  • Serve as a key financial advisor to the ED and Senior Leadership Team 

  • Provide insight for funding proposals, grant applications, and business cases, working with the Director of Philanthropy 

  • Lead organization-wide department-level discussions on financial planning, budgeting, and operational strategy 

  • Foster a culture of transparency and financial literacy across the organization 

Board & External Engagement

  • Prepare and present financial reports to the Board and Finance Committee 

  • Act as the authorized professional point of contact with auditors, banks, and other external stakeholders 

  • Negotiates contracts with external providers, and facilitates their onboarding, payment, and terms renegotiation 

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and support a high-performing Finance team through supervising subordinate manager(s) 

  • Build a collaborative, respectful, and accountable team environment 

  • Ensure succession planning and leadership development within the Finance team 

What You’ll Bring

Qualifications & Experience

  • CPA designation with a degree in a relevant field 

  • Minimum 7-10 years of accounting experience including: 

  • 5–7 years of progressive financial leadership experience 

  • At least 3 years of experience leading teams as a controller, assistant controller, or finance manager 

  • Prior experience in a non-profit or charitable environment strongly preferred 

  • Deep experience with payroll, funder reporting, and audit coordination 

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong understanding of GAAP, ASNPO, and regulatory compliance 

  • Proficient in Sage 300 and Microsoft 365; familiarity with CRMs is an asset 

  • Excellent communicator who can translate financials for non-financial audiences 

  • Proven ability to lead system improvements and strengthen internal controls 

  • Strategic thinker with high integrity and a commitment to social impact

Compensation

  • The successful candidate will start at a rate between $ 92,702 and $119,353 per annum, based on a 37.5-hour work week. This will be individually tailored to reflect your unique experience and qualifications as they relate to the role, along with internal equity.
