Comprehensive Support Worker - Part Time -Drop - In Program

The Comprehensive Support Worker position reports to the Site Manager and is responsible for supporting clients through various activities. This includes assisting with case planning and programming for clients, workers, volunteers, and/or SEED workers, in accordance with the care plans established by Mental Health Workers.

Key responsibilities include supporting clients with their daily social, physical, emotional, and life skills. This role also involves acting on behalf of clients when communicating with different agencies, assisting with programs and activities, and helping clients with meal planning, preparation, and cleaning the kitchen, which includes washing dishes and tidying up.

Additionally, the position encompasses janitorial and security duties, such as dusting, vacuuming, mopping, sanitizing, disinfecting, and deep-cleaning common areas of the building, as well as maintaining the exterior of the building. Controlling site access is also a responsibility, which involves providing entry to the building and signing in and out authorized visitors.  Observing, recording, and reporting activities, with a primary focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.

Salary & Compensation:

$27.92 to $29.60 per hour + benefits

Duties:

  • Conduct a point-of-care assessment to ascertain if there is a potential for harmful consequences. Based on the assessment of client behaviour, take reasonable action to avoid harm to themselves or to others.

  • May intervene in situations involving client and visitors, which are escalating, by using de-escalation techniques and their physical presence, but not physical contact.

  • When applicable, performs activities such as food preparation, keeping the kitchen, bathroom and common areas tidy and clean; conducts both minor and major cleaning activities consistent with the cleaning routines; ensures routines related to bug or insect infestations are followed and professional services called in as necessary.

  • Actions include using various communication strategies to reduce the tension or distract the client and/or contacting mental health teams or other care providers or calling 911 for professional assistance.

  • Provides feedback to appropriate mental health or health care team members.

  • Cleans, washes, and disinfects building areas such as walls, windows, floors, furniture, blinds, and washrooms by dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, and wet mopping, using various manual and power cleaning equipment.

  • Collects and removes garbage and recyclable materials, and disposal of hazardous waste. Cleans garbage receptacles as required.

  • Provides emotional support for clients and provides referrals to internal and external resources regarding a variety of issues such as landlord tenant issues, obtaining financial assistance from various government agencies; accessing community resources; obtaining and keeping volunteer or job placements including Skills, Esteem, Employment Development (SEED) program.

  • Documents client activities and behavior in staff communication log activities while on-site or job placement activities.

  • Records client feedback, inquiries and complaints. Reports concerning issues to immediate Manager. Demonstrates and models for clients healthy lifestyle behaviour and coping skills.

  • Provides basic first aid to clients. Maintains appropriate records of first aid provided.     Will call 911 as necessary 

  • Supports new staff members, volunteers, SEED workers and/or practicum students by sharing job information and demonstrating how tasks are to be performed.

  • Participates in staff meetings by sharing job related information and sharing ideas and suggestions.

  • Participates in effective communication between staff and management by verbal and/or written transmission of job related information.

  • Contributes to maintaining a positive work environment by adhering to all aspects of the Employer's policies, including the Respect in the Workplace Policy and the Violence Prevention Policy.

  • Works to ensure a safe environment for both staff and members/clients by reporting any situations that require repairs to equipment or the building.

  • Maintains janitorial equipment by cleaning and replacing items such as filters, bags, mop heads, etc. Follows WHMIS usage procedures and storage requirements. 

  • Monitors and maintains stock of inventory supplies, and orders items as required.

  • Cleans external areas such as entranceways, sidewalks, and parking lots by removing dirt, leaves, snow, and other refuse. Pick up and dispose of human or animal waste.  Assists with pest cleanup and site preparation for pest treatment as required.

  • Transport equipment, furniture, and supplies manually and/or using aides such as dollies and carts.

  • Launders mop heads, shower curtains and cleaning cloths as required.

  • Performs minor gardening such as weeding, pruning and watering.

  • May perform such duties as changing light bulbs that are within easy reach and/or unplugging sinks and toilets using an appropriate product or a plunger or snake.

  • Uses computer and camera monitoring systems to track those coming and going from the building. Logs in and out all visitors/service providers to the building.

  • Responds to client questions related to support and services, by directing the client to the appropriate Kettle staff member.

  • Patrol the building to maintain the safety and security of the building and clients, visitors, and staff.

  • Participates in positive/effective communication between staff and management by verbal and/or written transmission of job related information, and actively contributes in staff meetings.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12

  • Community Social Worker Certificate

  • Building Services Worker Certificate

  • 1 year of recent related experience including direct practical experience working such as crisis intervention, conflict resolution, psychological rehabilitation techniques, homelessness, working with individuals with mental illness and/or addiction and/or concurrent disorders.

  • 1 year of recent related experience including cleaning, and building maintenance.

  • OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and life and/or work experience.

  • Current and up to date certificates in CPR, Occupational Basic First Aid (OFA) Level 1, WHMIS Level 1 Food Safe, Naloxone, and Mental Health First-Aid Training.
