Overnight Mental Health Worker - Peggy’s Place - Casual
Due to the nature of working at women’s transitional home, applicants must be female identified.
Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Mental Health Worker provides direct support and care to residents of Peggy’s Place, a licensed care facility. Provides trauma-informed, strengths-based and person-centred support to residents with mental health, substance use and other complex needs. Supports residents with activities of daily living, medication administration, individualized service and care plans, life skills, programming, meal planning and preparation, household routines, crisis intervention, advocacy and community participation. Acts as a Key Worker for an assigned number of residents and serves as a primary point of contact. Works one-to-one with residents to develop and follow up on individualized goals, provides practical and emotional support, and collaborates with residents, staff, health care providers and community agencies to support continuity of care and resident well-being.
About Peggy’s Place - It is a one of a kind transition home designed to meet the needs of women suffering from mental illness, who have also experienced domestic violence, or homelessness.
Fun Fact: When it opened in 1997, Peggy’s Place was the first of its kind in all of Canada.

Hours and Days:
Must be able to work all shifts – not necessarily every day of the week. Shift hours are: 7:00am to 2:30pm, 9:00am to 5:00PM, 2:00pm to 9:30pm, 3:30pm to 11:00pm, & 10:30pm to 7:30am
Salary & Compensation:
$31.56 per hour + 10% each hour worked in lieu of vacation & statutory holiday.
Typical Duties:
Collaborates with residents to develop and implement Individual Service Plans and care-related goals. Meets regularly with assigned residents to review progress, provide support and follow up on identified goals and needs. Updates plans and programming as required.
Acts as Key Worker for assigned residents and provides ongoing one-to-one support, coaching, encouragement and advocacy to assist residents with mental health, recovery, life skills, housing, finances, health, employment, education and community participation goals.
Provides trauma-informed, strengths-based and person-centred support that promotes dignity, choice, independence, self-determination and recovery.
Provides residents with clear and respectful feedback when they are not meeting program expectations, care plan requirements or other established expectations. Supports residents to understand concerns and make appropriate changes and reports significant breaches or concerns to the Facility Manager.
Provides support with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, nutrition, mobility, appointments, household tasks and other needs identified in the resident's care or service plan.
Administers medications in accordance with medication administration records, physician orders, organizational policies, licensing requirements and the scope of the position. Completes required documentation and reports medication concerns, refusals, errors or changes in resident presentation as required.
Collaborates with nurses, physicians, mental health teams, substance use services, hospitals, government agencies and other external service providers as required to coordinate services, facilitate referrals and support continuity of care.
Documents resident activities, behaviour, progress, medication administration, care provided, program participation, health concerns, incidents and other relevant information in accordance with organizational and licensing requirements. Completes communication logs and prepares relevant information for the following shift.
Facilitates and participates in individual and group programs and activities that support residents' social, recreational, educational, physical, emotional and life skills development.
Prepares and serves meals for residents in accordance with the pre-approved menu developed and approved by a dietitian, and ensures meals meet established dietary, nutritional and food safety requirements. Oversees resident participation in assigned household chores, which may include meal preparation, setting and clearing tables, washing dishes, and maintaining the kitchen. Provides direction and support to residents in completing assigned chores and ensures kitchen and dining areas are maintained to required health, safety and cleanliness standards.
Acts as a role model and provides coaching and support with daily living skills such as hygiene, cooking, budgeting, shopping, communication, coping skills, healthy relationships and community participation.
Performs house management duties as required, including maintaining kitchen, bathroom and common areas, completing routine cleaning, following pest prevention procedures and reporting maintenance or health and safety concerns.
Recognizes changes in resident presentation, behaviour, physical or mental health and responds appropriately within the scope of the position. Uses communication and de-escalation strategies and seeks assistance from the Facility Manager, nurse, mental health teams, other care providers or emergency services as required.
Provides basic first aid to residents and maintains appropriate records. Calls 911 when necessary.
Records resident feedback, inquiries and complaints and reports significant concerns to the Facility Manager.
Completes incident reports as required by organizational policy and applicable licensing requirements, ensuring incidents are documented accurately, objectively, and within required timelines.
Supports residents by attending health care appointments, recreational activities, community appointments and other activities as required.
Supports new staff, volunteers, SEED workers and practicum students by sharing job information and demonstrating tasks and procedures.
Participates in staff meetings, care planning and team discussions by sharing relevant resident information, ideas and suggestions.
Participates in effective communication between staff, management, residents and external service providers through verbal and written communication.
Participates in maintaining a respectful, trauma-informed and safe environment by following organizational policies, including Respect in the Workplace, Violence Prevention, confidentiality, medication management and health and safety policies.
Reports situations requiring equipment, building or maintenance repairs and other health and safety concerns.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Grade 12
Community Social Worker Diploma
Two years of recent related experience, including direct experience working with individuals experiencing mental illness, substance use, concurrent disorders, homelessness or other complex support needs. Experience in residential care, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, psychosocial rehabilitation or trauma-informed practice is an asset.
OR an equivalent combination of education, training and life and/or work experience.
Class 5 BC Driver’s License when applicable
Current CPR, Emergency First Aid - Community Care Certificate.
WHMIS certificate.
Food Safe Level 1 certificate.
Medication administration training as required.
