Mental Health Worker - Sylvia’s Place - Casual

Reporting to the Site Manager, the Mental Health Worker provides trauma-informed, strengths-based, person-centred support to residents living with complex mental health, substance use, and trauma-related challenges. The Mental Health Worker promotes recovery, independence, community integration, and improved quality of life through collaborative care planning, skill development, advocacy, and therapeutic relationships. The position combines direct support, case management, crisis intervention, program facilitation, medication support, and community outreach within a licensed residential care setting.

Hours and Days:

Must be able to work all shifts – not necessarily every day of the week. Shift hours are: 8:30AM to 4:30PM, 12:00PM to 8:00PM, and 3:00PM to 11PM

Salary & Compensation:

$31.56 per hour + 10% each hour worked in lieu of vacation & statutory holiday.

Duties:

  • Collaborates with residents to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate Individual Service Plans using a trauma-informed, strengths-based, and recovery-oriented approach. Reviews and updates service plans as residents' needs and circumstances change.

  • Acts as the designated Key Worker for an assigned group of residents and serves as their primary point of contact within the program. Develops therapeutic relationships that foster trust, engagement, and participation in services. Meets individually with assigned residents on a regular basis to review progress toward established goals, identify barriers, provide encouragement, practical assistance, and coaching, and support residents in achieving goals related to mental wellness, recovery, housing stability, education, employment, finances, life skills, physical health, and community participation.

  • Provides trauma-informed, strengths-based, culturally safe, and person-centred support that promotes dignity, respect, autonomy, and self-determination. Demonstrates empathy, maintains professional boundaries, and encourages residents to build on their strengths while supporting recovery and resilience.

  • Facilitates therapeutic, educational, recreational, and life skills programming for individuals and groups that supports recovery, community integration, personal development, and social connection.

  • Supports residents in developing and maintaining independent living skills through education, coaching, modelling, and encouragement. Assists residents with activities including meal planning and preparation, budgeting, medication self-management, housekeeping, personal hygiene, communication, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, time management, accessing transportation, and connecting with community resources and recreational opportunities.

  • Provides advocacy and practical support to assist residents in accessing housing, income assistance, legal supports, health care services, education, employment, volunteer opportunities, financial resources, and other community services that promote independence and recovery.

  • Collaborates with physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, pharmacists, community mental health teams, hospitals, social workers, Indigenous organizations, substance use services, housing providers, government ministries, and other community service providers to coordinate services, facilitate referrals, participate in care planning, and promote continuity of care. Maintains effective communication with members of the interdisciplinary team while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with applicable privacy legislation and organizational policies.

  • Observes, monitors, and documents resident behaviour, mental health status, participation in programming, activities of daily living, medication support, substance use, progress toward Individual Service Plan goals, and other significant resident interactions. Maintains accurate, objective, and timely documentation in accordance with organizational policies, and legal documentation requirements.

  • Completes required administrative responsibilities including communication logs, monthly summaries, incident reports, inventories, petty cash records, maintenance requests, and other documentation as required.

  • Performs household management duties as required, including supporting residents with meal preparation, maintaining clean and sanitary kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and common areas, completing routine cleaning tasks, monitoring environmental health and safety, and following established procedures related to pest prevention and control.

  • Conducts ongoing assessments of resident presentation and behaviour to identify actual or potential risks to resident or public safety. Responds to behavioural, emotional, and mental health crises using trauma-informed de-escalation techniques, therapeutic communication, conflict resolution strategies, and professional judgment. Contacts emergency services, crisis response teams, or other health care professionals when appropriate and provides timely communication regarding significant incidents.

  • Provides feedback and relevant information to supervisors and members of the interdisciplinary team regarding resident progress, emerging concerns, changes in presentation, and recommendations for ongoing support.

  • Records resident feedback, concerns, and complaints and reports significant issues to the Site Manager in accordance with organizational policies.

  • Supports residents by accompanying them to medical appointments, community appointments, recreational outings, educational opportunities, court appearances, or other activities as required.

  • Provides first aid within the scope of training and organizational policy and maintains accurate documentation of first aid provided. Contacts emergency medical services when required.

  • Supports the orientation, training, and ongoing development of new employees, volunteers, practicum students, and other learners by sharing knowledge, modelling best practices, and demonstrating safe and effective work procedures.

  • Participates actively in staff meetings, case conferences, shift change communication, quality improvement initiatives, and organizational training by contributing information, collaborating with colleagues, and supporting continuous improvement in service delivery.

  • Contributes to a respectful, collaborative, and psychologically safe workplace by adhering to all organizational policies, including those related to respectful workplace practices, diversity, equity and inclusion, violence prevention, occupational health and safety, and confidentiality.

  • Identifies and reports hazards, equipment concerns, building maintenance issues, and other health and safety risks to promote a safe environment for residents, visitors, volunteers, and staff.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Grade 12

  • Community Social Worker Diploma

  • 2 years of recent related experience including direct practical experience working such as crisis intervention, conflict resolution, psychological rehabilitation techniques, homelessness, working with individuals with mental illness and/or addiction and/or concurrent disorders

  • Working knowledge of the residential tenancy act

  • OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and life and/or work experience

  • Class 5 BC Driver’s License when applicable

  • Current and up to date certificates in Basic First Aid, WHMIS, and Level 1 Food Safe

Skills & Availability:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
