Job Summary

Reporting to the Member and Community Engagement Manager, the Mental Health Worker (SEED Program) supports Members/participants in developing pre-employment skills through coaching, resource navigation, and volunteer as well as paid work experience placements. In collaboration with Members/participants, the Mental Health Worker develops individualized plans to identify and address barriers to employment. The role liaises with Kettle housing staff to establish employment placement agreements that outline job training, orientation, and dispute resolution processes to support successful placements. The Mental Health Worker also provides guidance and consultation to staff to enhance their understanding of Members'/participants' support needs in the workplace, assists Members/participants in evaluating job opportunities based on their skills and abilities, and supports them in resolving workplace issues and overcoming challenges to achieve positive employment outcomes.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. In consultation with the Member/participant, develops a detailed plan which includes behavioural management elements to focus on building skills and abilities to support the Member/participant in obtaining and maintaining paid employment, work placements or training in alignment with goals. This includes building capacity to handle all manner of workplace issues and challenges.

  2. Provides ongoing support and behavioral management to assist members/participants in developing the interpersonal, practical, and workplace skills required to successfully function in their placement, thereby promoting a positive and continuous employment experience.

  3. Maintains regular contact with the Member/participant and site staff regarding the work placement relationship. Takes proactive action to identify issues/challenges which may be developing in the workplace and develop and implement a plan to prevent them from resulting in the ending of the work placement relationship.

  4. Assists Members/ participants to understand their position; workplace policies and safety requirements and practices, by using plain language to explain the requirements within The Kettle’s policies and procedures and related employment legislative and income reporting requirements for ministry of social development and poverty reduction.

  5. Maintains active contact with other Kettle staff members, such as those at the residence, who are involved in actively supporting the Member/participant. Engages with the other Kettle staff to exchange information regarding a Member/participant experience in the workplace for the purpose of seeking insight and support from the other staff to support the Member/participant and/or to enhance the support provided to the Member/participant.

  6. Monitors and supervises the Clean Team or other SEED participants by performing duties such as setting monthly schedule, monthly crew meetings, checking the street daily to evaluate work performance and troubleshoot any complaints by the public; monitoring street equipment; ordering supplies; and assisting in training new crew members. Maintains participant attendance records and coordinates with the finance department and other Kettle departments to track, submit, and process weekly work placement hours for participant payments, including the distribution of payments to members.

  7. Oversees the janitorial and kitchen assistant positions by performing duties such as going on site with the Member/participant to assist in explaining job duties and/or demonstrating job duties and/or resolving work place issues. Works with Kettle staff at housing sites to coordinate scheduling, job tasks, and ongoing support as needed.

  8. Supports Member/participants who are leaving the SEED Program by teaching the Member/participant how to conduct a job search; write a resume; how to perform successfully in a job interview; referring the Member/participant to educational programs which can assist them to broaden or enhancing their job skills; providing a reference related to the Member/participant’s work performance while in the SEED Program.

  9. Maintains accurate Member/participant records and documentation, including progress reports on skill development and achievement of goals and objectives outlined in employment plans, while ensuring all reporting and documentation requirements for funding and submission purposes are completed using case management software or other specified systems.

  10. Review and count cash totals for the Drop-In Tuck Shop; replenishes inventory, maintains inventory records; provides sales information and provides cash received from Tuck Shop sales to the finance department.

  11. Participates in staff meetings by sharing job related information and sharing ideas and suggestions.

  12. Participates in fostering a positive, respectful, and safe work environment by implementing and upholding all aspects of the Employer's policies, including the Respect in the Workplace and Violence Prevention policies. Maintains effective communication among staff, management, Members/participants, and employers through verbal and written job-related information; identifies and reports safety concerns, including environmental hazards and verbal or physical abuse; and provides crisis intervention, emergency response, and required documentation and reporting as needed.

  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Grade 12

  • Diploma in Community Social Services – mental health-related

  • Two years of recent, related experience in a mental health setting including experience supporting clients to obtain and retain employment and/or volunteer placement

  • Or, an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

  • Current valid and unrestricted BC driver’s license and access to a reliable safe vehicle for work

  • Current and up-to-date certificates in Basic First Aid, WHMIS and Level 1 Food Safe, Mental Health First Aid, Violence Prevention Training, and Naloxone Training
